MLB 2K5: This review failed a test for illegal substances. Well Spring time is here, time to root, root, root for the home team! What? It’s the middle of September? How long was I out for? Any who, I’m pretending that didn’t just happen, so here we go! It’s America’s past time, the grand sport of baseball!
Take Two is back with ESPN (for what I believe is the last time) (Edit: ESPN teaming with Take Two for the last time, not the last time Take Two is making an MLB baseball game) to produce a band new baseball game. It even still has the $20 price tag. We all know what baseball is, or at least we all should know by now what baseball is. So how good does this game translate to real life? Pretty good, pretty darn good. The pitching meter in this game is the best version out there from what I played this year, really making this game stand out for me. Not to mention the exciting camera angles. You really get the realism when you see some of these replays, the camera work in this game will make the most boring of throws from short stop to first seem like a “Web Gem” or “Sportscenter” top play. The camera really helped make the game for me, especially with the awesome commentary; it really makes you feel as if the announcers were in your living room calling your game specifically.
The character faces on this game are a big improvement compared to last year. Mix that in with awesome character animations and you’ve got something to behold, especially when you watch these awesome replays. The bad side of this game is definitely fielding. This has been probably the hardest thing to translate from the sports world to a video game, and honestly, this game will not turn any heads here. This is the only part of that game that doesn't translate really well from real life. The fielding has mediocrity written all over it. The pitching/batting duels were a great addition and I could never wait for the next one, but once the ball is hit, you need to field. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not bad, it’s just not fun. Also this game doesn’t have the great sound tracks the football games have.
With this being your typical sports game, if you don’t like sports, or love baseball, you won’t love this game. I am a baseball fan, so I liked this game well enough. It’s far from perfect, but the commentary, camera angles, character animations, character faces, pitching meter, and pitcher/batter duels make this a big thumbs up for me, even with the music being below average and the fielding as crappy as ever.
